Ligatura is the diploma project of Sebastian Kubik, a music lover and graphic designer with no musical education, who wanted to create a wholly new instrument, on the basis of his visual design competence. Ligatura is an online typographic sound generator that enables users to design posters and generate original sound compositions through the same process.

Every glyph has its own basic sound, attuned to its visual appearance, which can be modified through design and usage.
These basic sounds are subjective acoustic interpretations of the 94 standard glyphs in the German language and their respective visual appearances.
They were generated with no regard for the existing rules of music theory in order to give the audiovisual instrument an independent sound and design language. The final graphic designs serve as notation and visualization of sound.
The website targets designers and visually-oriented people in general who have never learned how to play an instrument, enabling them to generate music and sounds intuitively.
The project explores the synesthesia of typography and sound as well as opportunities to expand the field of graphic design and transcend disciplinary boundaries, entering into new areas (sound generation and music).
