Erwin K. Bauer
Teaching Staff

Trained as farmer, typographer and graphic designer; creates, experiments, judges, curates, researches, reflects and publishes. Directs the interdisciplinary design studio buero bauer. Curator of Typopassage and the Vienna Design Week Laboratory. His course “Projekt Grafik Design” focuses on finding new design solutions for current societal issues. In the course “Designmanagement” he teaches methods, tools and practical knowledge for professional and responsible business activities.

Sabine Dreher
Teaching Staff

Born in Dornbirn. Founded the label Liquid Frontiers, a multidisciplinary studio for content and layout in cultural and corporate settings, in 2000. Has been supporting students of the Graphic Design Class in matters of content and concept since 2003 (diplomas and presentation techniques). Taught at the University of Art and Design Linz in 2012/2013. Contributor to “museum in progress” since 1995. Active as lecturer and jury member in Austria and abroad.

Gerd Haselsteiner
Teaching Staff

Grew up in the decades of digital revolution and trained as a graphic designer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna; Gerd doesn’t like to think in categories, disciplines and certainly not in media channels; was never afraid of learning to code nor using these techniques for his projects; worked for global ad agencies and international clients like Microsoft, Austrian Airlines, Ford, Land Rover and Disney and helped them sharpen their digital strategy and visual appearance; teaches "Human Computer Interaction" since 2016.

Wolfgang Haspinger
Teaching Staff

Graphic designer, has been teaching at the University of Applied Arts – in the computer studio and in the Graphic Design Class – since 1994. Wolfgang teaches our students to use the programs they will need as graphic designers, such as Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator or Acrobat, in a meaningful and efficient manner. He is also in charge of the IT structure in our Class.

Jörg Hofstätter
Teaching Staff

Born in a small village in upper Austria, Jörg studied Architecture and Industrial Design at the Oslo School of Architecture and the Angewandte at Studio Hadid. In 2004 he founded ovos, an interactive design studio on playful learning. Jörg believes in the power of digital play for learning and is involved in a range of European research projects on Serious Games, Gamification and the nature of play. The passionate bike rider teaches Human-computer-interaction with a focus on interactive user experiences.

Michael Karner
Teaching Staff

Born in Reichenau an der Rax. After school, he trained as a typesetter. This was followed by longer stays abroad, e.g. as UN soldier in Syria and volunteer in a Kibbutz in Israel, and by employment at print shops, typesetting studios, advertising agencies and publishers. Has worked as independent typographic designer and book designer since 2004. Extra-professional, but equally dedicated activities as hand compositor and printer. Michael teaches the course “Introduction to typography” in the first study phase in our Class.

Oliver Kartak
Professor

Born in Vienna; amongst the very first graffiti writers in town; extensive cover art works for the music industry; numerous corporate design and channel design clients such as VIVA, SKY, VIASAT, RED BULL and ORF; self taught photographer and film director; completion of a TV movie as director, screenwriter and editor; Professor of the class of graphic design since 2007. He is convinced a designer has the tools at hand to create anything and encourages his students to do so. He has never had a website and considers climate change as the most pressing issue of our times. Wheelchair user due to a motorbike accident.

Johannes Lang
Teaching Staff

Following his studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the WdKA in Rotterdam Johannes Lang attended the Type & Media Master program at the KABK in The Hague. Since his graduation he has been working in graphic and font design in Vienna. Under his label Langustefonts he publishes experimental fonts, revives historic fonts and offers font families for continuous texts. Johannes Lang has been teaching “Advanced basics of typography” (“Erweiterte Grundlagen der Typografie”) in Prof. Kartak’s Class since 2013.

Verena Panholzer
Teaching Staff

Verena is Art Director and founder of Studio Es, a studio for visual communication that creates bold, experimental and evocative works for a whole host of media. She is a member of Alliance Graphique International (AGI) as well as an active member of 100 beste Plakate. Verena is mostly working with clients from the fields of art and culture. Through the years the studio has received numerous international awards and she has been invited to join juries, conferences and festivals. In the course “Typography 3” Verena teaches typography in a digital environment.

Christian Schlager
Teaching Staff
Christian is co-founder of EXEX (former studio VIE) – a branding and design agency in the world of arts and culture. His practice is built around a mission to raise and challenge Austrian design standards. He charges his inspiration with a certain formula: one part highbrow, one part lowbrow, no secret sauce. As Alumni of Angewandte himself he returned to Klasse Kartak in 2019 as Senior Artist for central artistic course and diploma projects.
Clara Stern
Teaching Staff

To look at stories and movies only from a theoretical viewpoint (Mass Media and Communication Science and Theatre, Film and Media Studies in Vienna and Utrecht) was at some point not enough. In order to learn how to tell stories on her own she studied at the Film Academy Vienna, Screenwriting (prof. Götz Spielmann) and Directing (prof. Wolfgang Murnberger and Michael Haneke). After several short films, BREAKING THE ICE was her first feature film in 2022. Works as a screenwriter, director and moderator and teaches "Storytelling 1" in our class.

Katharina Uschan

Graphic designer, has been teaching in the Graphic Design Class since 1990. Projects and diploma support, basics of graphic design. Study commission. Office management.

Monika Wenger
Office

Born in Vienna. Following her commercial training she was employed at an international chemicals group for 12 years. Has worked as secretary for the Graphic Design Class since 1997. Go-to-person for any organizational requests for both teachers and students. Married with two grown children – which may be yet another reason for her great empathy for our students’ wishes and concerns.

Cordula Werner
Teaching Staff

Cordula Werner is a film editor and lives in Vienna. After attending the Vienna School of Graphic Arts, majoring in Photography, she joined the leading international producer of music videos as an editor and continued to develop in the direction of feature films and also TV. Countless commercials have since been followed by feature films and documentaries, primarily for cinema and TV. Since summer semester 2024 Cordula teaches "Storytelling 2" in our class.
